My Passion for Teaching

QuestionWhy is a college education important to you?

AnswerA college education is so important to me because it is a stepping stone in the direction of my career as teacher. It is helping me to develop the academic and life skills I will use every day in my field. Having worked closely with a variety of teachers in different grade levels and settings, I am beginning to develop my own teaching philosophies and a passion for educator’s craft, experiences that I never would have had if not for my time at Roosevelt University. College is so significant because it is the opportunity to specialize, to study not only what you are passionate about and interested in, but learning how to utilize these skills in real world settings. Finally, stepping into the classroom and working one-on-one with students, brought my textbooks alive and it foreshadowed what a future career in education could look like...and I love it! College opened the door to both a passion and a career, a complex combination of both learning and doing, and for me that it why it is so meaningful.

QuestionHow has the Arbor Falls Foundation made a difference in your life?

AnswerThe Arbor Falls Foundation has made a huge impact on my life. While a college education was a goal that I worked extremely hard for, the financial reality was that it was going to be a difficult struggle for my family as well as myself. The Arbor Falls foundation came into my life and gave me a sense of hope and direction. If I continue to work hard and do well academically, I could afford to attend college. I could afford to attain my teaching certification and continue to pass on the gift of education to others. Even more, what the Arbor Falls Foundation has given me extends much further than just a shot at a college education. Through kind mentors and connections created between scholarship recipients, the Arbor Falls Foundation has helped me to grow as an entire person, into a well rounded and driven individual who can implement goals for myself and achieve them.

QuestionWhat words of encouragement would you like to offer to others seeking to further their education?

AnswerAs a student who has commuted to and from school full time, while working throughout the year, my most important words of encouragement are, "Do what's right for you and love what you do." It is not always going to be easy. It's not always going to be fun. Nonetheless, the lessons, the people, and the experience that you have all along the way make your college experience so worthwhile. My biggest words of advice go out to any student who is considering a commuter college experience. I say this with personal experience, if commuting is what is right for YOU, go for it and you won't regret it! You can be involved in your school, and create meaningful friendships. You can study hard, and do well academically. You can spend time with your friends and family. You can work, earn for yourself and start saving for the future. You can make connections with future employers. You can take personal responsibility. You can explore what life has to offer. Make it a great day or not, the choice is always yours! Whether you decide to live in a dorm for college or commute, the goal of pursuing an education and bettering yourself is yours, don't ever let anyone take that goal away from you!
