“Being the first generation in my family to have a doctorate degree would validate my parents’ decision to emigrate because I was raised with the chance to succeed at the highest level in my education so that I do not have to struggle as they did.”
Why is a college education important to you?
My parents immigrated to the United States to obtain greater opportunities for our family. They have motivated me to pursue a pharmacy career because neither of them have a college education. Being the first generation in my family to have a doctorate degree would validate their decision to emigrate because I was raised with the chance to succeed at the highest level in my education so that I do not have to struggle as they did.
How has the Arbor Falls Scholarship made a difference in your life?
The Arbor Falls Scholarship has given me the opportunity to live in the city of Chicago. I do not have to commute to school and with my apartment, I am becoming more independent. Although it is nice to be home with my family at times, having my own space in Chicago is relaxing.
What words of encouragement would you like to offer to others seeking to further their education?
As cliché as it sounds, never give up. There are times in your educational career where you will feel defeated. Whether it is exams, classes, money or personal conflicts, you must simply look at them as motivation to overcome them. Others around you are dealing with similar situations and can help relieve your stresses. That is why it is important to be active in volunteering, work and classes because you never know who you will meet. Also, don’t stress. Make the most out of your college experiences because a difficult exam is just a small corner of the big picture.
